About Brian P McDaniel MD MPH
Brian McDaniel MD is a board certified Family Medicine Doctor who provides Primary Care in Clearwater Florida. Dr. McDaniel is dedicated to providing adult men and women with the compassionate, high quality primary care services. He is here to help patients with a wide variety of illnesses, injuries, and chronic diseases while also emphasizing presentation and routine screenings. His goal is to maximize patients well-being, function, and longevity. Dr McDaniel also has expertise in Obesity Medicine and is able to use lifestyle changes, medications, and surgery to help patients lose weight in in a healthy sustainable way.
Philosophy
Dr McDaniel believes creating deep, long lasting relationships with his patients is key to improving health. He focuses on lifestyle choices, preventative medicine, and management of chronic medical conditions to help keep his patients healthy. He believes that “more medicine is not always better medicine” and that the pros and cons of each additional treatment should be carefully weighed while taking into the account the patients personalized goals and opinions. Whenever possible, Dr McDaniel manages his patients medical conditions himself and does not believe in referring patients to specialists for every new medical issue. Brian McDaniel MD centers his practice around “Evidence Based Medicine,” which uses the latest medical research to guide treatment decisions.
Background and Training
Dr McDaniel grew up in South Florida before going to school at both the University of Florida and Florida State University. He graduated Summa Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Biology as well as a Master’s Degree in Public Health before obtaining his medical degree. Dr McDaniel completed residency training at the University of South Florida Family Medicine Residency program affiliated. Brian McDaniel MD is board certified in Family Medicine and has received additional training in order to become board eligible in Obesity Medicine.
Volunteering
Dr McDaniel founded a free clinic in Gainesville called “Equal Access at Bartley Temple” and held a leadership role as Co-Director of a network of free clinics. Brian has participated in multiple international medical mission trips to medically underserved countries, and continues to volunteer at local free clinics such as the Willa Carson Center. Dr McDaniel teaches medical students through his educational website StompOnStep1.com and YouTube lectures which have over 4 million views.
Research
Dr McDaniel has received a number of grants to perform research and quality improvement projects relevant to primary care. Most recently Dr McDaniel received a grant from the American Academy of Family Physicians to establish a telemedicine program for diabetic patients and an educational telemedicine curriculum for resident physicians. Brian McDaniel has studied the reduction in unnecessary Emergency Department visits that result from better access to medical care at free clinics. He has also investigated the motivating factors and barriers for physicians to volunteer with local free clinics. As an undergraduate student Dr McDaniel did research on the regulation of cancer causing genes.
Life Outside of Medicine
Dr Brian McDaniel is married to Amy-Joy McDaniel MD, a primary care physician in Dunedin. They live in Clearwater Florida and enjoy traveling together. Brian is an avid college football fan, and goes to the gym every day to stay fit and healthy. He enjoys mentoring medical students as well as personal finance and classic cars.
